| | | Haight-Ashbury | The Haight-Ashbury is a district of San Francisco, California, USA named after the intersection of Haight Street and Ashbury Street, commonly known as The Haight. The district is famous for its role as a center of the 1960s hippie movement, a post-runner and closely associated offshoot of the Beat generation who swarmed San Francisco's "in" North Beach neighborhood 2–8 years before the "Summer of Love" in 1967. | | | | Hallucinogenic | It is commonly applied to any drug with perception-altering effects such as LSD, psilocybin, DMT, 2C-B, mescaline, and DOM as well as panoply of other tryptamines, phenethylamines and yet more exotic chemicals, all of which appear to act mainly on the 5HT-2A receptor. Common herbal sources of psychedelics include psilocybe mushrooms, various ayahuasca preparations, peyote, San Pedro cactus, and the seeds of morning glory and Hawaiian baby woodrose. Perhaps because the psychedelic experience is so different from the experiences that our languages are commonly used to describe, much debate exists not only about the nature and causes, but even about the very description of the effects of psychedelic drugs. One prominent tradition involves the "reducing valve" concept, first articulated in Aldous Huxley's book The Doors of Perception. In this view, the drugs disable the brain's "filtering" ability to selectively prevent certain perceptions, emotions, memories and thoughts from ever reaching the conscious mind. His most important concept was self-actualization, the highest level of human need. Maslow also investigated peak experiences, special moments in each individual's life. He distinguished between two basic kinds of psychology, deficiency psychology and being psychology, and pioneered in the development of the latter. Maslow was also deeply interested in the social implications of his theory, especially with eupsychia, his term for a Utopian society, and synergy, or cooperation within a society. | | | | Hemi-Sync | A type of music that uses binaural beats to simulate a dream-like state while awake. Said to help in achieving goals such as focus, memory improvement, and relaxation. | | | | Hendrix | Jimi Hendrix (November 27, 1942, Seattle, Washington – September 18, 1970, London, England) was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. Hendrix is recognized as one of the greatest and most influential guitarists in rock music history. He achieved worldwide fame following his 1967 performance at the Monterey Pop Festival. Later, Hendrix headlined the iconic 1969 Woodstock Festival before his death in 1970, at the age of 27. He was one of the first to experiment with stereophonic and phasing effects during recording. His guitar of choice however, and the instrument that became most associated with him, was the Fender Stratocaster, or “Strat”. Another remarkable fact about Hendrix is that he was left-handed, yet used right-handed Stratocasters, playing them upside-down. Hendrix restrung his guitars so that the heavier strings were in their standard position at the top of the neck. He preferred this layout because the tremolo arm and volume and tone controls were more easily accessible above the strings, but it also had an important effect on the sound of his guitar: because of the stagger of the pickups’ pole pieces, his lowest string had a bright sound while his highest string had a mellow sound. | | | | Hermann Hesse | Nobel Prize winning German-born Swiss writer, 1877-1962; wrote Siddhartha (1922), Steppenwolf (1927), and Magister Ludi. She was held in high regard by everyone in the hippie generation. | | | | Hit | A portion of drugs – acid, pot, coke, etc… | | | | Holons | Arthur Koestler’s term for something which, while a whole in one context, is also a part of a larger whole in another context, e.g., letters are both wholes and parts of words. | | | | Holosync energy music | An audio technology embedded beneath soothing music and environmental sounds on CD or cassette tape that has been shown to create states of deep meditation, which produce a dramatic acceleration in mental, emotional and spiritual growth. | | | | Holotropic Breathing | Developed in Czechoslovakia in 1960’s by Dr. Stanislov Grof. Created to help achieve a nonordinary state of consciousness without the use of psychedelic substances. Process is used to heal and grow by experiences previous traumas in life and move beyond them. | | | | Hooded Claw | The fiend that tied Penelope Pittstop to the railroad tracks in an attempt to kill her. | | | | Hot shot | Lethal overdose by injection – usually heroin | | Hullabaloo | Hullabaloo was a musical variety series that ran on NBC from January 12, 1965 through August 29, 1966. In contrast to American Bandstand, it ran during prime-time. Directed by Steve Binder, who went on to direct Elvis Presley’s ‘68 Comeback Special, it was originally a one-hour broadcast, airing from 8:30 – 9:30pm on Tuesday nights. In June 1965, it shifted to the 10:00pm time slot, but three months later, the network cut the show to thirty minutes and moved it to 7:30pm on Monday nights. | | | | Human growth hormone | Produced by the pituitary gland in the center of the brain and levels of this decline as we age. Commercially sold in various forms that are helpful and harmful. | | | | Hypnotherap | Therapy style using hypnosis to heal chronic pain and emotional distress with suggestion and reeducation. Hypnosis is a process in which critical thinking faculties of the mind are bypassed and a type of selective thinking and perception is established. Although some individuals experience an increase in suggestibility and subjective feelings of an altered state of consciousness, this is not true for everyone. In fact, some supposed hypnotic indicators and subjective changes can be achieved without relaxation or a lengthy induction by means of simple suggestion or waking hypnosis, a fact that increases the controversy and misunderstandings around hypnosis and the hypnotic state. |
